2002 FARM BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR.
Presented by the National Association of Farm Broadcasters.

Vital Statistics:

What's a typical day for you as Farm Director?
Everyday is different and that's one of the best things about my job. I don't punch a time clock or even ask if it's o.k. to do the things I do on a daily basis. My bosses trust my judgment and that's nice. The only thing that's the same everyday for me is that I get up at 3:30 every morning.

How many interviews do you think you've conducted in your 26 years at WAXX?
I haven't kept track but conservatively I'd say it's been between 8,000 and 10,000. And no I don't save them all!!

Who's your favorite interview?
My favorites are the 4-H kids, especially the younger ones as they are brutally honest and sincere. I also enjoy visiting with foreign people to get their perspective on events.

Why do you do what you do?
I am a farm broadcaster because I love agriculture and the people involved in it. They are hard working, honest people who love what they do and are proud of what they do. I don't think there is another group in our society who has the life skills that farm people have.

What's your favorite FARM TOUR?
Probably the most unique destination is Alaska. I don't think there's another place on Earth that is like Alaska. Other beautiful and interesting spots include Switzerland and other parts of Europe, especially some of the quaint mountain villages that seem almost untouched by modern society. I can honestly say, though, we've never taken any tour that has been a dissappointment. If you don't believe me, you can sit through the approximately 3,000 slides I have from our tours.

What do you do when you're not working?
My wife and I have two sons. The oldest is serving with the U.S. Army in Germany and the youngest is a student at E.C. Memorial High School where he is active in varsity football and basketball. I also have some horses I enjoy riding and driving when I get the chance. It's nice to talk to them and not have them talk back!
